The cyber police of the Zaporizhia region have exposed a hacker suspected of causing damage to a well-known hosting company by mining cryptocurrency on its servers.
The press service of the Cyber Police reported that for this purpose, the 35-year-old man hacked more than 5,000 customer accounts of this hosting company, which he used for further access to generating cryptocurrency.
At the same time, the police established that the man had been collecting information from open sources, finding weaknesses in the protection of various international companies, and gaining access to their servers since 2018.
«After gaining access to these accounts, the attacker began to deploy unauthorized virtual machines (software that simulates the operation of a computer) using the company’s server capacity. As a result of such actions, the company suffered losses in the amount of about $4.5 million or almost 185 million UAH in equivalent,» the Cyberpolice noted.
According to law enforcement, this hacker periodically changed his place of residence within the Poltava, Odessa, Zaporizhia, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. After searches, police seized computer equipment, mobile phones, bank cards, and other physical evidence.
Currently, the person involved in the criminal case faces up to 15 years in prison.
As dev.ua reported, an anonymous researcher under the pseudonym GangExposed has launched a large-scale information war against the cybercriminal group Conti. He is publishing personal data, photos, and videos of key participants (including Russians) — from administrators to ringleaders who directed attacks from the UAE.
By the way, experts recently found that AI systems will soon surpass Bitcoin mining in terms of energy consumption.
Due to a shortage of electricity, the Russian Federation has banned cryptocurrency mining in the LPR, DPR, the occupied territories of Zaporizhia and Kherson regions, and other regions
