The platform has already stopped accepting new applications for the old program, Engadget writes . According to X representatives, the updated system is designed to reward authors who bring “original ideas, expertise, reporting, creativity and analytics” to the platform. Payments will be made based on the number of views of the author’s content.
According to the new rules, the following fall under the monetization criteria:
author's texts, investigations and reports.
self-taken photos and videos.
user-generated memes and illustrations.
Earnings from other people's content will be significantly limited. Authors will be able to monetize publications using other people's materials only if they add meaningful author commentary, in-depth analysis, or creative editing.
Simply adding subtitles, descriptive text, or overlaying text blocks that merely explain what is happening in the video or photo will not be considered original content. If the user contribution does not create new value, the platform will not charge.
To be eligible for the Original Content Rewards program, bloggers must meet a number of strict requirements:
Age and geography: be over 18 years old and reside in a country where the program is available.
Subscription: have an active Premium, Premium+, or Premium Business subscription.
Audience: have at least 500 verified followers.
Views: Get at least 500,000 views on your feed from verified users in the last 90 days.
The key change is that to qualify for payouts, views must come exclusively from Premium subscribers, and creators must maintain these metrics in order to receive regular payouts.
Participants in the old revenue sharing program will have to apply for a new membership starting September 8. However, users who have not previously participated in monetization can apply for the new program now.
The changes come after X updated its monetization algorithms in March to give more weight to engagement from a creator's home region. This was done to combat accounts that faked US affiliations to obtain higher payouts and artificially boost political content. It is not yet known whether this geo-targeting will be retained in the updated system.
