"In Ukraine, the general trend is greater for IT than for hardware specialties." The President of KAI explained why this trend still persists, despite the boom in defense-tech vacancies

According to KAI President Ksenia Semenova, in general, most applicants across the country are trying to get into classic IT specialties, rather than hardware ones, which will allow them to work in defense-tech in the future. However, as Semenova says, this trend does not apply specifically to KAI.

Semenova spoke about this in an interview with LB.ua.

«It seems to me that the trend is growing. After all, IT is still more popular. In our country, it is not, but in Ukraine the general trend towards IT is greater than towards hardware specialties, towards defense technology. But there are more and more of them. The number of applicants to the specialty „Aviation and Rocket and Space Engineering“ is increasing — this is what concerns drones. At the same time, there are specialties where it is not explicitly written that it is about drones, but which are related to defense technologies, and where everything is completely bad,» she claims.

As the university president notes, it is still difficult to recruit students for specialties such as applied mechanics, composite materials, and engines, that is, narrow-profile ones.

«We have groups in these specialties, but there is not much growth there. There is still room to work and communicate that the defense industry is something worth paying attention to, that there are high salaries, and anything can stagnate in the economic spheres in Ukraine, but definitely not defense tech,» said Ksenia Semenova.

The President of KAI believes that one of the objective factors why applicants choose IT rather than deeper engineering specialties is the level of difficulty of training, which many students may simply not be able to handle.

«You can study IT knowing mathematics, and now, probably, just thinking logically, considering that everyone is tinkering with artificial intelligence. In hardware specialties without good, fundamental knowledge of physics and mathematics, they simply won’t be able to study even in their first year. Therefore, the barrier is not so much people’s desire, because this is already being overcome to some extent, but the fact that they don’t know natural sciences well,» she concluded.

As dev.ua reported, about 150 applications were submitted for the joint educational program of the Kyiv Aviation Institute and the defense company Fire Point. However, the first recruitment actually did not take place, as none of the candidates were able to pass the company’s entrance exams.
