PON has become the main technology for connecting Ukrainians to the Internet. Moreover, the number of new lines in rural areas is growing, while in cities it is declining.
PON (Passive optical network) has become the main technology for connecting subscribers to the Internet in Ukraine. According to NKEK data for 2024, PON accounts for 48,5%. This is 3.98 million lines.

Recall that in the last years of the war, due to regular blackouts, subscribers gradually switched to PON Internet, which could work during blackouts, having backup power at the communication node.
This capability was not available in FTTx connection technology, where the Internet cable is first routed to a special switch installed in houses and then distributed to apartments. This switch requires constant power and is the network’s Achilles' heel.
Most networks in Ukrainian cities were built on FTTx. But now the technology is rapidly losing popularity. According to the report, FTTx lost 4% of the market and now accounts for 42,7%.
The transition to fiber optics has increased the average speed of Internet connections in Ukraine. For example, 46% already receive service at speeds from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps. In 2022, such subscribers accounted for only one quarter of the total number of connections.
The total number of Internet subscribers in Ukraine in 2024 amounted to 8.2 million households.
Interesting fact: the number of urban subscribers decreased by 40,000 to 5.93 million last year. The number of rural subscribers, on the contrary, increased by 14,000 to 2.27 million.
