In 2018, when Michael Yang was a first-year computer science major at Stanford University, he wanted to gain a competitive edge when applying for internships.
After searching for a job he wanted and using LinkedIn’s feature that sorts roles posted in the last day, he changed the numbers at the end of the site’s URL from 86400 — the number of seconds in 24 hours — to 3600 — the number of seconds in one hour.
«It really helped me make a list of jobs that had recently come up that I could prioritize,» Ian, 25, told Business Insider.
IT guy says this trick helped him focus on the latest job openings, and he thinks it was one of the reasons he landed internships after his first two years of college. During his sophomore year, in 2019, he was offered internships at Microsoft and Meta — and he accepted the latter.
In 2020, Yang dropped out of Stanford to found his own AI startup, Simplify, which helps people find and apply for jobs. Applying early remains one of his top tips for job seekers, he says.
When asked about Jan’s job filter trick, LinkedIn told BI that the keyword and search filter restrictions annoy some job seekers, but the company is working to reduce these restrictions.
