Ukraine is working on developing its own air defense complex, as well as a modern missile system as a deterrent against the Russian «Oreshnik».

This was announced by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrsky, in an interview on a telethon.

«Back in Soviet times, we actually produced all the control systems for anti-aircraft missile systems,» the commander-in-chief said. He believes that Ukraine has the capacity and capabilities for this, and work is underway to create its own domestic air defense system.

Syrsky expressed hope that this complex «will be no worse than Patriot» in terms of its characteristics.

The commander-in-chief also called the Russian experimental Oreshnik missiles a threat against which Ukraine currently has no defense.

«And at the moment, only a few air defense systems can intercept it. Unfortunately, we don’t have such systems yet, but we must do everything to ensure that they appear,» Syrsky said.

He noted that Oreshnik encourages Ukraine to create its own anti-missile system and to actively negotiate with partners to obtain an appropriate complex from them. It also, he said, encourages the creation of a modern missile system that «could be a deterrent against the use of such weapons by the Russians.»

Currently, according to the commander-in-chief, «work is actively underway» on the development of both the anti-missile and missile systems. «I hope that we will soon get the desired result for us,» he concluded.
