In January, Ukrainians purchased more new electric cars than in December. The BYD Leopard 3 was the most purchased. But due to the 20% VAT refund, imports of used and new electric cars expectedly subsided after the December hype.
Last month, cars with traditional engines accounted for about 58% of the new passenger car market, Ukravtoprom reported . But last year, this figure was 60%.
New car sales in January:
gasoline models — 34% of new car sales in January, last year it was 39%;
hybrid cars — decrease from almost 25% to 23.5%;
diesel cars — 23.5% versus 21% in January 2025;
electric cars — growth from 15% to about 19%;
cars with HBO - less than 1%.
The most popular model among electric cars in January was the BYD Leopard 3. 169 units of these cars were sold. In terms of sales, it is the fifth position on the list, where the RENAULT Duster is in the lead (409 units).
From January 1, 2026, customs clearance of an electric vehicle in Ukraine has become more expensive due to the return of 20% VAT, which, as expected, affected January import figures.
According to the Institute for Automotive Market Research, after the December rush (almost 31,000 imported cars), imports of used electric vehicles amounted to 1,374 units, which is 94.5% less than in December and 53.7% more than in the year.
The number of imported new electric vehicles is 864 units, which is 85.2% less compared to December.
"However, unlike used cars, new cars are still showing positive dynamics compared to last year."(+35.6%), which indicates the inertia of official dealers and large corporate orders," the Institute for Automotive Market Research noted.
