Instead of "perfect" algorithms, live radio with all its surprises: Senior Angular Engineer created the RedWave FM radio player

Senior Angular Engineer Oleksandra Kaplun presented her new web player for radio stations called RedWave FM. The application is designed for those who are tired of the predictable algorithms of streaming services and want to feel the real drive of live radio.
Love of music and DJ past
The idea of developing her own music service did not come to Oleksandra by chance. In the past, she has experience working as a DJ in the dance community, which helped her deeply understand the essence of interacting with audio content.
“I was once a DJ at a dance party myself. And it’s not just about preparing a playlist, it’s about the ability to follow the audience and subtly feel fatigue or a surge of drive. I feel like a real music lover, because you can definitely say about me, ‘she listens to everything.’ Of course, I have favorites, but at the same time, I always give every genre a chance to surprise me and fill my heart,” the developer said on LinkedIn.
A year ago, Oleksandra decided to create her own radio player just for fun. Then she chose Angular 15, but the experience turned out to be not entirely successful: “Then I thought about trying Angular 15 (I didn’t have time earlier because of migrations) — and honestly, it didn’t impress me at all (well, that happens).”
Return to the project
This week, the engineer returned to her own development with a fresh perspective and an additional year of experience. Oleksandra completely rewrote the application, using the most current solutions: “So this time I chose a more modern stack — Angular 21, signals, everything I like according to the latest “trends”.”
Answering the question of why radio and not just another playlist service, Oleksandra explains: "Why radio and not just another playlist app? Because the principle of live broadcasting is very close to music lovers. Radio doesn't ask what you like. It gives every genre a chance to be heard."
How RedWave FM works
The RedWave FM application offers convenient functionality for comfortable listening:
Instant random playback: pressing the "Random" button near the main player immediately turns on a random radio station from the top 100 by popularity without additional settings.
Country selection: via the drop-down list you can download stations from the selected country (by default determined by the browser language).
Filtering by genre: interactive tag chips (Jazz, Rock, Pop, Chill, Electronic, Classical, Dance, Hip Hop, Blues, Metal, Indie, etc.) allow you to quickly narrow down the list of broadcasters.
Search by name: The "Find the station name" field finds the desired station by the entered letters.
Favorites list: You can save any station by clicking the heart icon. Favorites are saved in the browser even after refreshing the page, and can be viewed by clicking the "Show favorites" button.
Live: Since RedWave FM broadcasts live, there is no rewind or tracklisting — just a play/pause button and a notification if the station is temporarily unavailable.
Oleksandra Kaplun invites everyone to evaluate the project, abandon annoying algorithms, and immerse themselves in the world of radio: "So if you also miss not the "perfect" algorithm that plays the same songs almost all the time, but live radio with all its surprises — catch the link, press Play, and trust the restless wave."
