Rakuten will help Ukrainian defense startups scale outside Ukraine
Six Ukrainian companies working on innovations in the field of defense technologies will present their solutions at the leading exhibition DSEI Japan 2024. This was made possible thanks to a new collaboration between the Brave1 cluster and the Japanese giant Rakuten Group, which opens the way to the Japanese market for domestic defense tech developers.
Participation in the exhibition, which will be held on May 21-23 in the city of Chiba, became the first practical stage of an initiative aimed at promoting Ukrainian dual-use technologies — that is, those that can be used in both the military and civilian spheres. This was reported by DOU.
Among the participants:
Swarmer is a team developing software for autonomous drone swarms;
Griselda is a real-time situational awareness platform;
SkyFall Industries LLC is the manufacturer of the famous Vampire and Shrike drones;
Farsight Vision LLC — AI solutions for geospatial intelligence;
Dwarf Engineering LLC is a developer of hardware and software components for combat UAVs;
LifesaverSIM is an emergency services simulator that simulates critical care scenarios.
Brave1 selected companies with a focus on software solutions that are more easily scalable and do not require a physical presence in the country. Artem Moroz from Brave1 notes that demand for Ukrainian solutions in Japan is growing because they have already been tested in combat conditions.
Rakuten’s cooperation with Ukrainian residents
For Rakuten, this is not the first step towards cooperation with Ukraine — in 2024, the company opened a Kyiv office and became a resident of Diya City. Its local Rakuten Viber team already has over 40 people. Based on the results of the exhibition, the company plans to more actively involve Japanese public and private players in interaction with Ukrainian startups.
This format opens up new prospects for the export of Ukrainian defense technologies and at the same time serves as a signal of growing confidence in Ukraine as a technological hub in times of war.
Recall that a recent Rakuten Viber survey in 2024 showed that over 60% of Ukrainians have encountered cyber and telephone scammers.
