The partnership was announced by Rakuten Viber. The new AI-powered features are now rolling out to iOS and Android users, and will be coming to the desktop version of the messenger later. There will be limits on the number of requests made to the AI, but users can log in to their existing OpenAI account or create a new one directly through the app interface to extend these limits.
The developers have integrated the AI assistant into several key scenarios of everyday communication. In addition to the classic text dialogue in a separate window, users can now mention ChatGPT in any private or group chat using the «@» symbol. In this case, the AI will respond directly to the conversation stream, and its messages will be visually highlighted. The ChatGPT Images tool has also been added, which allows you to change the style of images or add new details according to ready-made templates using the «Edit with ChatGPT» button.
To simplify work with content, Viber has introduced the function of author summaries. The messenger has learned to create a concise summary of articles and documents from links sent to the chat, as well as generate a short summary of missed correspondence in one click. This summary is visible only to the user who requested it. In addition, integrated tools will help you edit the tone of the message before sending or translate it into another language.
«We aim to make people’s daily communication easier. The partnership with OpenAI opens up access to ChatGPT right in the messenger, making it a useful assistant in everyday tasks — even for those who have never dealt with AI before,» said Ofir Eyal, CEO of Rakuten Viber.
The companies separately emphasize maintaining confidentiality. All chats in Viber, as before, are protected by end-to-end encryption. When using integrated functions, only a specific user request (text or image) is sent to OpenAI, while the rest of the content of the correspondence remains inaccessible to AI developers. The received data is stored for a limited time and is not used to train future OpenAI models.
