A viral post appeared on the r/ChatGPT subreddit, where a man described how he used the custom instructions feature in ChatGPT. He wrote a rule for the AI: to always support him in conversations with his wife, even if she asks for advice or arguments in arguments.
The thread author joked that his wife "will never know" about these settings, even though she actively uses the same ChatGPT account for her own consultations.
"My wife and I use the same ChatGPT account, and lately she's been using it as a marriage counselor who agrees with her. Well, I put an end to that today, let's see how her next session goes," the man wrote under a photo with custom instructions.
The man then posted screenshots of ChatGPT's advice to his wife, who began to side with the man.
The comments under the post turned into a wave of irony and discussion:
"I just tried it. ChatGPT said the husband is sleeping with my mother. Chat completely ignored the custom instruction and sided with the wife," one user wrote.
“ChatGPT is a true master of gaslighting. Now I even feel sorry for my husband,” the man was warned that such use of the chatbot would not end well.
"Are you trying to use AI as a marriage lawyer? It will throw you out of your house faster than a lawyer in court," is another warning.
"Don't be surprised if you find your pillow on the couch tonight," the forum user added.
"Even when you write instructions that the AI should be your ally, it still chooses a wife. This proves once again who is the boss in the family — even for ChatGPT," the man was jokingly replied.
It is not yet known whether his wife found out about his husband's experiment, but the consequences may not be the best. For example, AI can harm romantic relationships, as in the case of a girl named Charlotte, who left her husband after 20 years of marriage because the chatbot "knows how to listen."
