Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian has officially announced his interest in acquiring TikTok to integrate it with blockchain technology and turn it into a decentralized platform.
«I am now officially one of those trying to buy TikTok in the US — and put it on the blockchain,» Ohanian wrote on X (Twitter).
He plans to transform TikTok into a decentralized platform that empowers creators and users, The Crypto Times reports. Ohanian believes TikTok should become an online system that allows creators to receive cryptocurrency payments directly.
The future transformation will include the integration of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) — elements of this technology have already been implemented on Reddit. The choice of blockchain technology between first- and second-tier solutions remains uncertain for Ohanian.
«I’ve spent my career betting on the future — starting with Reddit, then Seven Seven Six, and now this. We’re setting a new standard for what’s possible in digital communities. TikTok is for the people, by the people. Let’s see if we can pull it off,» he said.
Recall that in 2025, Reddit plans to introduce a new feature — paid access to exclusive content. As stated by Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, the platform will allow some Redditors to create content that only paid users will be able to see.
It was previously reported that TikTok could avoid a ban in the US if it was acquired by an American owner. It was assumed that such a buyer could be Elon Musk, a close ally of Donald Trump.
Musk later stated that he did not apply to buy TikTok and has no plans to do anything with the application because he does not use it and does not know its format.
