"I have an avalanche of fake candidates." IT recruiters complain about the prevalence of candidates who pretend to be someone they're not. What's going on?

IT Recruiter Anastasia L. complained that recently she has come across many developers who provide false information about themselves, or even pretend to be someone else. Other candidates are also noticing a similar trend. Let’s take a look.

«I have an avalanche of fake candidates. Maybe it’s just my luck and talent for finding adventures, but lately I’ve often come across profiles that pretend to be Ukrainian engineers. Classic CV, correct stack, everything as it should be. But it’s worth chatting a little — and it becomes clear that there’s something wrong with these profiles,» the specialist said .

According to Anastasia, here are the main points that fakes «stumble» over when it comes to interview invitations:

  • «Yes, I’ve worked with everything that’s needed,» but there’s no hint of the required experience on the resume.
  • Strange wording during correspondence, as if Google Translate had a fight with ChatGPT. Or a general refusal to switch to Ukrainian and all communication from the candidate from Ukraine exclusively in English.
  • Answers in the style of «Yes, I did that», but no specifics or detailed answer.
  • They indicate universities that are not located in Ukraine or do not exist at all.
  • There is little activity and connections on LinkedIn, as if the profile was recently created.
  • A perfect profile or headshot photo, where a little bit of intelligence obviously played a role.

«So if you get a letter or response from an 'ideal candidate', but something about the story is off, maybe you should take a closer look,» the recruiter noted.

In the comments to the post, recruitment experts agree with Anastasia and are surprised at the same time.

«Yes, I also encounter this more and more often. From my observations, the first bell that „something is wrong“ is communication exclusively in English,» noted recruiter Oksana Novak.

Oleg Datskiv, Lead ML/AI Engineer, also said that as a technical engineer, he also often encounters fake candidates during technical interviews. «They pass the soft skills selection from recruiters, but when it comes to technical knowledge, they are lacking,» he said.

Roman Kurshanev, who also works in recruiting, believes that Chinese IT professionals are posing as Ukrainians. «I see that this trend has reached our market,» he comments.

But Senior Backend Magento (PHP) Developer Oleg Rybin calls the situation strange: «Considering that the Ukrainian market is currently in crisis and there are almost no vacancies, I don’t understand why I would pretend to be a Ukrainian developer? There is no demand.»

Talent Acquisition Specialist Marta Zagranovska says that among the candidates there are also «disabled people with hearing aids» who can only communicate in writing. «And I also came across a candidate like you are talking about,» she states.
