His former subordinate is named Jack Clark, who in 2015, when few people thought about artificial intelligence, was obsessed with it and constantly insisted on writing about the technology in Bloomberg.
“I insisted. As a reporter on Bloomberg’s Big Tech team, Jack had a fairly stable job. In contrast, OpenAI seemed to have no particular direction, and I saw no way to make it financially sustainable other than asking Musk for more money. I also selfishly wanted Jack to stay at Bloomberg and continue covering Google and AI, which he was doing well,” the journalist recalls.
He has become an influential expert and consultant on AI security and related topics, and has co-authored several research papers in the field of AI. Jack also created one of the most popular AI newsletters, Import AI, which is widely read by researchers in the field. He still writes to this newsletter regularly.
Jack Clarke worked at OpenAI for more than four years, working in strategy and communications before becoming director of policy. He may have taken a stake in the startup, but journalist Alistair Barr isn't sure.
“Then, in 2020, he left OpenAI and I didn’t hear from him for a while. He resurfaced a few months later as one of seven co-founders of Anthropic, a company founded by a group of former OpenAI employees,” says Alistair Barr.
Anthropic can be considered one of OpenAI's main competitors. It is backed by Amazon and Google, as well as several leading venture capital firms.
Jack Clark knew that artificial intelligence was important. When the opportunity arose, he took a chance.
