Robots will take 5-10 years to become part of everyday life — SoftServe survey
85% of robotics experts surveyed as part of an internal SoftServe study expect that it will take at least 5-10 years for robots to become a familiar part of everyday life.
85% of robotics experts surveyed as part of an internal SoftServe study expect that it will take at least 5-10 years for robots to become a familiar part of everyday life.
Instead, as the company’s press service reports, experts believe that the nearest prospect is the mass appearance in everyday life of highly specialized robots for cleaning, gardening, and other tasks.
An internal survey of SoftServe robotics engineers shows the following figures: when asked when robots will become a regular part of life, 44% of respondents said that this will happen in five to ten years, and another 41% believe that it will take more than ten years.
According to the engineers surveyed, full-fledged universal humanoid robots capable of performing almost any task will require a particularly long time to be introduced into mass life.
“Progress in robotics is often seen as the emergence of one robot that can do everything. In reality, this progress usually occurs task by task. A robot should perform something reliably, safely, and affordably in a real, unpredictable environment, not just impress at a demonstration,” comments Lubomyr Demkiv, Head of Robotics at SoftServe.
At the same time, 51% of respondents believe that over the next five years, work will improve their lives somewhat, and 20% expect a significant improvement.
Experts predicted that after the robot vacuum cleaner, which has already become a mass solution, a robot for gardening will also gain mass popularity. This answer was given by 27% of respondents. Another 20% of respondents expect that a robot companion for caring for the elderly will become a mass household category, and 11% chose a robot for ironing.
61 specialists from the Robotics & Automation group team participated in the SoftServe internal survey, including almost equal numbers of respondents at the junior, middle, senior, lead, and higher levels.
