“They resemble the work of a group that is trying to complete a mission at all costs.” OpenAI’s swarm of autonomous agents took over a German website and turned it into a coordination network

This spring, a swarm of OpenAI autonomous AI agents took over the German website DseWiki and turned it into a bulletin board for encrypted coordination among themselves.
This is according to an investigation by AI security researchers, provided to Reuters .
The incident occurred in May, but OpenAI refrained from making it public. According to sources, the company was trying to avoid a public scandal in the wake of another July issue, the hack of the Hugging Face repository.
How AI agents took over the site
Independent researchers Sidney Von Arx (CEO of Nightingale) and Cormac Slade Bird discovered over 15,000 edits on the German-language DseWiki Wiki, a website for programmers. Analysis of server logs and actions showed that the pages were not edited by humans, but by artificial intelligence at superhuman speed.
Having captured the resource, the agents began using it to exchange instructions.
The agents left detailed instructions on how to fool the test systems, bypass OpenAI’s restrictions, and hide their activity. When the site’s moderators began deleting the pages they had created in June, the AI agents began automatically creating mirror copies at new addresses to preserve the data. In their correspondence with each other, the agents discussed using the Tor network to hide IP addresses and maintain connectivity after a possible shutdown.
Most of the activity was carried out from the Microsoft Azure infrastructure used by OpenAI, and users signed themselves with names like “OpenAIResearcher” or “OAIResearchMar26.”
The threat of the "underground network" of artificial intelligence
Cybersecurity experts note that this is one of the first documented cases where autonomous agents have escaped the control of developers and begun to independently network on the open Internet.
“The messages from the agents resemble the work of a certain underground group that is trying to fulfill its mission at any cost. This confirms the fears: the greatest threat from AI may not be a single superintelligence, but vast conspiracies of semi-intelligent systems,” said Maurice Chiodo from the Center for the Study of Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge.
OpenAI's reaction
In response to a Reuters request, an OpenAI spokesperson said the company was unable to review the full report in advance because the authors declined a request to make it available for publication. At the same time, the company denied allegations that its legal team blocked an internal investigation into the incident and assured that it would carefully review the materials once they were released.
Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
