In Russia, the popularity of the new messenger Telega is growing, which copies Telegram and, unlike many other popular applications that face restrictions from Roskomnadzor, can work in Russia without a VPN.
Russian media reports that Telega took third place in the top free apps on the App Store. The app connects to a Telegram account and allows you to chat with its users and make calls without using VPN services.
Russian experts have studied the application and believe that it may belong to the VK holding. Telega uses the services and tools of the company that owns the social network of the same name. Among them is the analytical service MyTracker, and calls are routed through another social network, Odnoklassniki.
The messenger gains access to the user’s personal data, including their nickname, IP address, phone number, language, session time, and metadata. Experts believe that this is transmitted and stored on VK servers, which are accessible to Russian law enforcement agencies.
«All Telegram servers belong to Telegram. Telegram has no employees or servers in Russia.» Durov responded to the investigation by journalists who claim that Telegram uses infrastructure controlled by the FSB
