New Russian V2U drone with AI uses Chinese minicomputer based on NVIDIA Jetson Orin

The Main Intelligence Directorate has published data on the design of the new Russian V2U strike UAV, which Russia is using in the Sumy direction. Its components include technologies from Western companies.

Information about this drone appeared on the War&Sanction portal. The GUR notes that the V2U is capable of autonomous search and selection of targets using artificial intelligence. Calculations are performed on the Chinese minicomputer Leetop A203, where the NVIDIA Jetson Orin processor acts as a processor.

«The V2U is equipped with only one GPS module, which probably indicates that the Russians have refused to use satellite navigation due to the operation of Ukrainian electronic warfare systems. Navigation using „computer vision“ is probably used — the drone compares the image from the camera with pre-loaded photos of the area,» the intelligence officers report.

Nvidia Jetson is a series of low-power embedded computing boards designed to accelerate machine learning applications. In September 2022, Nvidia announced the Jetson Orin Nano in two variants: 4 GB (about $199) and 8 GB (about $299).

The GUR also said that the Russians can control the V2U drone in FPV format via LTE communication. For this, the drone is equipped with a Microdrive Tandem-4GS-OEM-11 modem-router, which works with a SIM card of a Ukrainian mobile operator. The modem is also of Chinese origin, as are most of the other components: the engine, GPS module, servos, SDD, rangefinder, speed controllers and batteries.

«In addition, a Japanese Sony photosensitive sensor, an electromagnetic relay from the Irish company Te Connectivity, and the aforementioned American Jetson Orin module were installed,» the intelligence agency reported.

Recall that Ukraine is considering legislative changes that would require the identification of all mobile phone users, both new and existing. This initiative was discussed by the parliamentary subcommittee on cybersecurity in the context of combating the use of mobile networks by hostile drones.
