Eugene likes to watch TV series and movies in his free time, but among the large number of releases and streaming platforms, it is difficult to choose those that are really worth attention.
In order not to waste a lot of time searching, he created a site with trending series and movies based on the opinions of viewers of different platforms.
Initially, it was a tool for personal use — a very simple version for monitoring TV series and movies. Then the developer decided to improve it and, after a few evenings of vibecoding, created a public version of his tool, which he posted on GitHub .
What Ratingo offers
Ratingo collects information from various streaming services and shows a true picture of the popularity of TV series and movies.
«Instead of wandering through Netflix, Max, Amazon, Hulu, Disney+, and others in search of something: you open Ratingo, see what people are watching right now, choose what suits you, and don’t waste your evening on boring nonsense,» says Eugene about the site’s goal.
The popularity of TV series and films can be viewed both globally and within Ukraine.
The top 3 releases are also shown, and in the «Rises and Falls» category you can see how the number of viewers changed over 30 and 90 days.
The site also has an «Upcoming» category where you can see what will be released soon, for example, new episodes of the series.
How ratings are created
The site uses data from services such as TMDB, Trakt, and IMDb to create ratings.
Ratingo looks at Trakt — an API where you can find out how many viewers are watching a show or movie on different platforms. Then at the TMBD API to get descriptions, casts, ratings, series, seasons, etc. from there. And also at the IMDb API to pull ratings if they are not in TMDB. All this is run every 5-10 minutes, for updating, and every 6 hours the data is pulled if new shows or movies have appeared, but they are not in the cache.
In addition, Ratingo users can help improve the project. The site has a «Development Ideas» section where you can vote and suggest new features.
