Linux kernel developers have decided on an official position on code written by AI. What is its essence?

After months of heated debate on the topic, Linus Torvalds and the Linux kernel development community have established their official position on code generated using artificial intelligence.

According to Tom’s Hardware, last week the Linux kernel project finally introduced an official policy that clearly allows the inclusion of code generated using artificial intelligence, but on the condition that developers adhere to new strict disclosure rules.

New community guidelines require that AI agents not use the legally binding «Signed» tag, but instead use the new «Assisted» tag for transparency.

In general, the new policy legally attaches every line of code generated by AI, and any resulting errors or security flaws, to the specific person who sends it.

The publication reminds us that Torvalds' position on this aspect is simple: AI is just another tool.

«Irresponsible individuals who submit garbage code will not read the documentation anyway, so the kernel should focus on holding specific human developers accountable, rather than trying to control the software they run on their local machines. This is a very smart, pragmatic approach, especially against the backdrop of the panic that has gripped other corners of the open source ecosystem,» the publication concludes.

As dev.ua wrote, Finnish-American programmer Linus Torvalds, who initiated the development of the Linux kernel, used programming with artificial intelligence for his hobby project.
