The developer created HotLayout, a server-driven UI builder. Who might benefit from this solution and how does she plan to monetize it?

Flutter developer Erica Gyendyesi created HotLayout, which she calls a server-driven UI builder. She believes it’s ideal for banks, fintech, and those running loyalty and gamification programs.

Erica Gyendyeshy announced the development on her LinkedIn page.

“There are things that take too long to change in mobile applications. For example, you need to quickly add, fix, or hide something, and this is again development, release, and waiting on the pages. In my previous job, I encountered this constantly. I think marketers encounter this even more often,” she described the problem.

Thanks to HotLayout, you can assemble a screen in the editor, and it immediately appears in the application — without a release.

“Now it can work with loyalty, gamification, and surveys. There are renderers for Flutter and native ones,” the developer said.

Erica noted that she doesn’t have any clients yet, but plans to develop and scale the product. She shared a link to the HotLayout website and demo.

How it works

In a comment to dev.ua, Erika Gyendyesi explained the application of the solution in more detail.

“For example, a banner with a promotion, an onboarding screen, a quest, or some kind of rewards page is usually done like this: design -> developer -> release in Google and Apple stories. Then waiting for approval, if everything is OK — waiting for users to update the application. That is, a lot of time passes from the idea to the result on the user’s screen. I think this is not okay — especially when it comes to marketing, promotions, and giveaways,” she says.

With HotLayout, she says, developers integrate the required package into their application once, and then the appropriate manager assembles the screens in a visual editor in the browser and clicks "publish," and the application pulls up a new screen without a release.

“And it’s not just about one screen, it can be a whole flow. For example, a survey with several pages, gamification — completing certain missions (invite a friend, pay with a card for an amount >2000 UAH, …) to collect coins, which can then be exchanged for some gifts,” she described the mechanics.

She also focused on certain points:

  • the same screen description (JSON) is drawn by different widgets on iOS, Android, etc.;
  • The editor only describes the screen view, and the application takes the data from its backend: this is fundamental for fintech and banks. "That is, no data passes through us," Erica assures;
  • The screen itself cannot do anything dangerous: all actions, such as opening a link, paying for something, are performed by the application. "The SDK sends an event, such as onAction, and the application decides what to do with this event," the developer adds.

Finding the first teams for pilot launches

Erika Gyendyesa plans to further monetize the product, which currently has an open-core model.

“SDKs for all platforms and the screen description format itself are already open on GitHub under the Apache2.0 license. The editor is paid. There are several options: use on our cloud, embedding a web component in your own admin panel, and self-hosting (still in development),” the developer shared.

Aitivytsa explained that the idea for the product came to her based on her own professional experience.

“At my previous job, my team and I had the task of implementing our own SDUI, because it had to work in a closed loop. We did exactly as much as the company needed at that time. But even then I understood that this tool could be made even better, more efficient, but priorities changed, and then I was laid off altogether. When I took on the development of the editor, I already understood what I wanted to see in the end, the pitfalls, and how not to do things. This experience significantly accelerated the development,” the specialist said.

According to Erika Gyendyesa, she is currently looking for the first teams for pilot launches of their products and, if successful, is ready to talk about further cooperation.
