The future will disappoint engineers who want a "pure" developer career. AWS VP explained what qualities are expected from today's juniors

A top manager at Amazon Web Services warned: the era when a junior developer could simply sit down at an IDE and write code for eight hours straight is gradually becoming a thing of the past.

Mark Brooker, VP and Distinguished Engineer of Agent AI at AWS, said in an interview with The Peterman Pod podcast that junior developers will increasingly be expected to have direct customer interaction and business understanding — not just technical skills.

«For some, it will be incredibly exciting, and for those who came for a 'pure' development career, it will be a little disappointing,» he said. «For those who want to just sit down, open an IDE, and not stop for eight hours, building a career on that approach will become increasingly difficult.»

At the same time, Brooker emphasized that deep technical knowledge is not losing its value — on the contrary, «the ability to ask the right questions is worth more than ever.»

The job market for junior developers remains volatile, with companies increasingly relying on AI after a wave of layoffs in the post-pandemic era. However, there are some positive signs, with LinkedIn, IBM, and Cognizant all announcing expansions into entry-level positions. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, in particular, called the current graduates «AI natives» and noted that this sets them apart from their peers.

One of the most in-demand roles today is that of forward deployed engineer: a developer who works directly within a client’s team. This role has already been dubbed «the hottest job in AI.»
