Head of the IT Ukraine Association on changes in the IT labor market: "The market is now on the employer's side"
Executive Director of the IT Ukraine Association, Maria Shevchuk, said that currently IT companies receive significantly more responses for one vacancy than a few years ago, and it has become more difficult for newcomers to IT to even get interviews.
Executive Director of the IT Ukraine Association, Maria Shevchuk, said that currently IT companies receive significantly more responses for one vacancy than a few years ago, and it has become more difficult for newcomers to IT to even get interviews.
Shevchuk told this in an interview with The Page. She indicated that in 2021, the IT labor market was on the candidate’s side, and recruitment could last «a matter of days».
However, after the full-scale Russian invasion began, funding decreased and the number of candidates increased. The development of AI and the focus of companies on automation and staffing also played a role.
«The market transformation continues. Today, hiring has become easier than before the war, because companies receive significantly more responses for one vacancy. That is, the era of „easy entry“ into the IT industry for specialists is over. The market is now on the employer’s side», — says Maria Shevchuk.
According to her, most newcomers to IT are switchers from other fields and students or graduates of computer science-related majors. Shevchuk says they can look for their first job for two months to a year.
«In addition, it is significantly more difficult for beginners to even get an interview — 36% of those looking for their first job in IT have never communicated with an employer», — noted the head of the IT Ukraine Association.
According to Maria Shevchuk, AI has already become a «full-fledged tool» in the work of Ukrainian IT companies, but she warns beginners against overly relying on technology — this can prevent them from deeply learning basic knowledge.
«Generating ready-made solutions simplifies work, but without critical thinking and practice, it can slow down professional development. Therefore, the real value for juniors lies not in a quick result, but in the ability to understand the logic of solutions and gradually build their own expertise», — said Shevchuk.
