Man accidentally buys three $1,500 worth of Samsung SSDs for just $30 at flea market

Under the radiator of the Asus Hyper M.2 expansion card were three Samsung 980 Pro SSDs with a capacity of 2 TB each.

Amid the ongoing component shortage and the significant increase in the cost of storage systems, a buyer named Sunny (@whateversunnyfinds) from Kuwait managed to find a real treasure. Having visited the largest local open market, Souk al-Jumah (Friday Market), he purchased a regular PCIe expansion card from Asus for $30, writes Tom's Hardware.

After removing the heatsink from the Asus Hyper M.2×16 Gen 4 board (which itself retails for around $79), the buyer discovered three slots inside, occupied by Samsung's flagship 980 Pro drives, each with 2TB capacity. The SSDs themselves appeared to be in perfect condition.

On current marketplaces, one such drive is valued at $444–$499, which makes the total value of the find approximately $1,300–$1,500. So the buyer received 6 TB of high-speed memory for the price of a regular budget cable or used accessory.

This type of expansion card allows you to install additional M.2 SSDs through a standard PCIe x16 slot, which is usually used for graphics cards. Since the heatsink completely covers the internal slots, the previous owner could simply forget about the three SSDs inside, removing only one of the four drives before putting the device up for sale.
