Samsung has released the Galaxy XR headset at a price half that of the Apple Vision Pro already on the market.
As Bloomberg reports, the $1,800 headset is a precursor to the company’s smart glasses, which will also be available soon.
The new mixed reality headset is a joint development between Samsung Electronics and Google. The publication recalls that the gadget was first announced in December last year.
Samsung has not yet disclosed sales expectations for the Galaxy XR, but acknowledges that this category of its products is still in the early stages of development.
The new Galaxy-branded headset is the first to run Android XR, Google’s new operating system optimized for mixed reality devices. Samsung and Google are also reportedly collaborating on smart glasses, which, like the Galaxy XR, will feature Google’s Gemini AI assistant.
Google is also collaborating on similar glasses with other brands, including Warby Parker and Gentle Monster.
Like the Vision Pro, the Galaxy XR features a high-resolution 4K Micro-OLED display for each eye and has see-through cameras so users can see their surroundings. There’s also a full-immersion mode optimized for tasks like gaming or watching videos. Inside, the headset is powered by Qualcomm Inc.'s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip.
The claimed battery life is 2.5 hours on a single charge, which is in line with the Vision Pro.
At the same time, the Galaxy XR weighs only 545 grams, while the Apple headset weighs 800 grams.
To support this product category, Google and Samsung are offering a free «Explorer Pack» to early adopters this year, which includes 12 months of Google AI Pro, a full year of YouTube Premium, a trial of YouTube TV, and a number of other subscriptions.
Beyond movies and TV, many of the Galaxy XR’s features are designed to showcase the latest Gemini AI features. For example, while wearing the headset, you can draw a circle with your finger around real-world objects (or anything on the screen) to get information about them.
As dev.ua wrote, in the meantime, Meta launched Hyperscape: the Quest 3/3S VR headset scans a room and turns it into a photorealistic world.
