Ukraine imposes new sanctions against Russian AI drone manufacturers
On August 16, the decree of the President of Ukraine imposed sanctions against individuals and legal entities associated with the production of UAVs using artificial intelligence in Russia.
On August 16, the decree of the President of Ukraine imposed sanctions against individuals and legal entities associated with the production of UAVs using artificial intelligence in Russia.
Restrictions were imposed against 39 Russian citizens and 55 companies, according to a decree published on the President’s website.
In addition to Russian companies, the list also includes 10 Chinese companies that supply key components for Shahed and other UAVs: navigation receivers, routers, cameras, microcircuits, transistors, etc. There are also 2 companies from Belarus: Minsk Gear Plant and MNIPI.
Among legal entities from Russia:
«Progmatic» is the manufacturer of the «Microb 10» UAV, a small-sized FPV kamikaze drone with an electronic autopilot and an AI-based automatic target acquisition system;
«Smart Birds» is the manufacturer of the Soroka UAV, an FPV kamikaze drone with a combat load of up to 3.5 kilograms. It is equipped with an optical target acquisition system and is capable of automatically overcoming radio shadow zones and electronic warfare interference;
The Center for Artificial Intelligence Technologies «Neurolab» develops and trains AI models for UAVs that provide autonomous navigation, target recognition, and data processing from sensors (cameras, radars, etc.). For this purpose, significant computing resources are involved, which are provided by the participants of the ANO «CTSHI Neurolab»;
The Center for Unmanned Systems and Technologies (CBST) is a Russian organization created to implement innovations in the field of unmanned systems and technologies.
«Russia is actively investing in unmanned technologies using artificial intelligence, and this process should be taken as seriously as possible. AI in drones increases autonomy, accuracy, and resistance to electronic warfare, allowing them to automatically navigate, recognize, and track targets even without the participation of an operator,» said Vladyslav Vlasyuk, the presidential commissioner for sanctions policy, writes Suspilne.
He added that a modern electronic component base and significant computing resources are critically important for creating such drones. According to him, it is precisely on the companies that provide these capabilities that the prepared sanctions package focuses.
The decree also states that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine must inform the competent authorities of the European Union, the United States of America and other states about the application of sanctions and raise with them the issue of introducing similar restrictive measures.
