"Shaheeds" are no longer jammed by electronic warfare - they fly via Telegram and Ukrainian mobile operators

The latest drone models are not affected by the Ukrainian electronic warfare system because the drones no longer rely on GPS, are guided by artificial intelligence, and use the Internet of Ukrainian mobile operators.

This was pointed out by Oleksandr Fedienko, a member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security and a member of the Servant of the People party, referring to an article by The Economist.

What has changed in drones?

Engineers who analyzed the latest batch of Shahed note:

  • New models do not depend on GPS , the signal of which can be blocked.

  • Control is achieved through artificial intelligence algorithms that allow the drone to “see” the route without satellites.

  • UAVs connect to Ukrainian mobile and Internet networks — presumably for spatial orientation or receiving commands.

The Economist article states that until recently, drone hunting was mostly carried out by mobile teams armed with cheap machine guns, portable anti-aircraft missile systems and short-range artillery. Now, according to Colonel Denis Smazhny, an air defense officer, drones regularly maneuver around fire teams.

They initially fly low to avoid detection, then climb sharply to 2,000-2,500 meters as they approach cities. That is why the Defense Forces have begun using helicopters, F-16 fighters, and interceptor drones to counter the "shaheeds."

A story about a note inside a drone, probably left by a Russian engineer, attracted particular attention. It discussed a new control algorithm, where drones are controlled via Telegram bots that transmit coordinates to operators or receive feedback in real time.

Oleksandr Fedienko refused to comment on the "conspiracy theory" about the engineer, but noted that GPS spoofing by mobile operators hints to us that the shaheeds somehow live inside mobile operators when they fly over our territory.

"So it can be a plastic SIM card, e-SIM, or a software SIM card (a SIM card implemented in software, not on a physical chip), using this set they can already fly on A-GPS. There is no point now in installing CRPA antennas, which are quite expensive. I don't know if this is true or not, but if it is, then it is quite clear now why in Russia mobile operators turn off their mobile networks during an alarm," the People's Deputy added.

Fedienko reported that work on this issue has been underway for a long time in the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security. According to the MP, not all mobile operators are meeting in communication and developing solutions to limit the use of the operator's infrastructure by shaheeds.

Recently, volunteer Serhiy Sternenko spoke out on the topic of Russians using Ukrainian SIM cards in "shaheeds", suggesting that the state take control of the sale of SIM cards in Ukraine, in particular, sell them to citizens using their passports. However, not everyone supports this decision, including Oleksandr Fedienko.

"But you don't need to immediately close Telegram and transfer SIM cards to passports. This will in no way solve the issue systematically. But turning off the same data transfer on operator networks, I think it's a matter of time...", - concluded a member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security.

This is not the first time that the threat from Telegram has been reported. Earlier, the head of the "Return Alive" charity, Taras Chmut, noted that the messenger undermines the state's ability to conduct mobilization activities. In addition to Telegram, Chmut also spoke out in favor of closing the Chinese platform Tik-Tok.
