Briefly, what is SHEPIT
SHEPIT is an educational multi-platform for game developers, e-sportsmen and gamers, which aims to become a desktop service for competent game development and finding yourself in the field of gaming.
History
Myroslav has been working in the game development field for 7 years, 5 of them as a game designer. All this time, he was constantly studying and collected almost 1 terabyte of data in his own cloud of knowledge.
«This mania for collecting knowledge gave me a clear understanding: in Ukraine, there is very little information about game development beyond basic knowledge of Unity and game design. And this especially affects niche professions, which are very important now,» said Myroslav in the GameDev DOU blog.
The idea to make an information platform for developers was born when Myroslav and his brother Gleb, who also has experience in game development, were sitting in a cafe during a blackout. Later, after considering all the details, the brothers realized that for the implementation of the plan, an amount equal to a third of the value of their house is needed. The boys did not have such an amount and Myroslav sold his favorite car.
Since the project budget was small, the developers turned to novice freelancers: a designer and a programmer.
«In some sense, we were all Junes. Me and Junior’s brother are in business and our new team Junior is in development. However, this approach worked: the team grew from talented newcomers who are ready to work for results,» Myroslav said.
Release
This is currently an alpha version of the platform with only courses. Users can log in, register, take a course, get a certificate and download it to their computer or LinkedIn.
«It’s important that you can see our style. And this is about convenience, efficiency and rethinking of many elements in the process of self-learning,» explained Myroslav.
The main feature, which is indicated immediately in the course card, is the level of difficulty: for beginners, specialists and experts.
There are currently 4 courses recorded: 2 for beginners, which are free, and 2 for specialists.
Courses for beginners:
Game Designer is about everything important in the profession of a game designer. This course focuses on all aspects of the work of the DG. You will learn all about this market and the profession and will be able to touch the creativity and routine of this profession. The brothers have included a documentation of their indie prototype in the materials, from which you can pull many useful patterns and see what the decision-making process looked like in the studio.
Narrative Designer -here the developers went wild in practice. The course focuses on how a narrative designer can create a product to showcase their writing skills. Contains a lot of information about genres, settings and preferences of audiences.
Courses for specialists:
Sound Designer —creating sound for computer games. Hands-on course for sound professionals who want to learn how to work in game development. The course introduces the full cycle of sound development for computer games. You’ll learn how to work with a team, develop documentation, and implement audio using the Wwise audio engine. And most importantly, learn to think like a sound designer.
Project Manager —project management in the field of game development. The course is for those who want to master all the subtleties of game project management: from mobile games to PC, from product to outsourcing, from indie teams to large corporations.
Among the teachers are professionals with teaching experience, most of whom were found at GameDev DOU.
Plans
For the upcoming update, the SHEPIT team is preparing a feature that will help people with visual and hearing impairments learn information.
In addition, they plan to:
to improve the quality of self-study;
expand tools for practice;
create a large amount of documentation with instructions;
develop new courses with the participation of leading experts.
«We strive to become the most convenient platform for self-learning in game development. And we are looking for investments to implement these ambitious plans,» Myroslav said about the plans.
