Elon Musk's AI startup xAI has released the Grok app, a standalone version of the AI bot built into X.
The application has the same functions as Grok in X: you can use it to create images, summarize text, and answer questions, all in a conversational tone that the startup itself calls “humorous and engaging,” writes Engadget.
It's currently in beta, available only on the App Store for users in the US. It's not known when it might arrive on Android.
The app was first tested with a limited number of users in December 2024, around the same time that X introduced a free version of Grok available to everyone. Before that, you had to pay at least $8 per month for X Premium to have the privilege of using the AI.
After Grok on X became available to everyone, a Ukrainian AI expert tested it and shared his findings .
The limitations of this free access — 10 requests every two hours, 3 image analysis requests per day — may also apply to the Grok app. It can be used without logging in or with an Apple, X, Google, or regular email account. It is unclear whether the X Premium subscription provides additional benefits in the app in the same way as the X subscription.
Grok stands out from its competitors primarily because xAI positions it as capable of answering “tasteful questions” that other AI assistants avoid, and because the Grok version of the AI model is open source .
