In his blog, Microsoft President and Vice Chairman Brad Smith called AI a “golden opportunity” for American economic competitiveness, arguing that it will become a general-purpose technology that will change the world, The Register writes .
But progress requires new alliances and massive infrastructure investments, Smith said, confirming that Microsoft plans to invest about $80 billion in AI-enabled data centers around the world. More than half of that amount will be invested in the United States.
Shares of chipmakers jumped today as the news showed that demand for semiconductors will remain strong, Reuters reports .
Micron shares rose the most, up 10%. Applied Materials and Lam Research rose between 5.3% and 6.1%. Nvidia added 4.6%. AI server maker Super Micro Computer jumped 9.9%.
