Google has quietly released an app that allows users to run a number of openly available AI models from the Hugging Face AI development platform on their phones.
The app, called Google AI Edge Gallery, is available for Android and coming soon to iOS. It allows users to find, download, and run compatible models that generate images, answer questions, write and edit code, and more. The models work offline, without the need for an internet connection, using the processors of supported phones, TechCrunch reports .
The AI Edge Gallery, which Google calls an “experimental alpha,” is available for download from GitHub . The home screen displays shortcuts to AI tasks and capabilities, such as “Ask for an Image” and “Chat with AI.” Tapping on a feature opens a list of models that are suitable for the task, such as Google’s Gemma 3n.
The Google AI Edge Gallery also provides a “Prompt Lab” that users can use to run “one-off” model-based tasks, such as summarizing and rewriting text. Prompt Lab comes with several task templates and customizable parameters to fine-tune the behavior of the models.
Google warns that performance may vary. Modern devices with more powerful hardware will run models faster, but model size also matters. Larger models will take longer to complete a task, such as answering questions about images, than smaller models.
Google invites community members to provide feedback on their experience with Google AI Edge Gallery. The application is licensed under the Apache 2.0 license, which means it can be used in most contexts—commercial or otherwise—without restrictions.
