The public organization «Ukraine in Color», which is engaged in innovation, preservation, digitization, and dissemination of Ukrainian culture, has released a browser extension «Font Cutter». What are its capabilities?
«The font is the body of the word. It is the physical form of your thought, which is never neutral. We have learned to distinguish between languages, but for a long time we did not notice how the enemy continues to „speak“ to us through the voice of symbols,» the developers say .
According to them, using the Russian Cyrillic alphabet now means «allowing the enemy to continue to shape our visual space.» And the choice of font is «not just a technical decision, it is a gesture of respect for our history and our freedom.»
«The font cutter is a tool of our common hygiene. It was created not to restrict, but to highlight. We reveal the Russian to make room for the Ukrainian,» the organization notes.
The extension visually identifies which fonts are used on the site — Russian or Ukrainian. If it detects Russian fonts, it offers to replace them with Ukrainian ones.
The developers of «Shriftoriz» say that it is the first font «antivirus» in the world, which has a font database consisting of 325 Ukrainian and 1298 Russian or those with a Russian connection.
«The font cutter works autonomously in the background and can be called manually on the active tab if desired. After installation, it also becomes available in Canva (www.canva.com), expanding the list of fonts and marking both fonts with a Russian trace and Ukrainian fonts,» Ukraine in Color states.
The extension currently works in Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, ChatGPT Atlas, Dia, and others) and is available for download from the Chrome Web Store. A version for other browsers is expected to be released in the future.
