Kylie’s story is recounted in an OpenAI Newsroom post on the X social network.
«When Kylie was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, doctors warned she might only have months to live. At 18, she made a will, chose a coffin, and began living from one check-up to the next,» the blog states.
However, despite the doctors' predictions, Kylie continued to live for the next five years.
After one of his wife’s recent MRIs, her husband, Cole, used ChatGPT to navigate the complex terminology of medical reports. The conversation with the chatbot prompted the husband to revisit Kylie’s original biopsy results, where ChatGPT helped uncover an important detail: a mutation in the IDH1 gene.
«Together with a neuro-oncologist, he figured out what that meant. According to updated medical standards, Kylie’s tumor turned out to be not glioblastoma, but IDH-mutant astrocytoma — a disease that is also serious but has a completely different prognosis,» the OpenAI blog said.
So, instead of preparing for the worst, Kylie and her doctors have refocused their treatment plan on long-term therapy. «Now, after years of uncertainty, she and Cole are making plans for the future,» the blog states.
