SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son said he has reached an agreement with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to form a joint venture in Japan. SoftBank will pay $3 billion annually to use OpenAI’s technology.
According to Reuters, the joint venture SB OpenAI Japan will offer artificial intelligence services to corporate clients. It will also pay $3 billion a year for the use of OpenAI technologies in SoftBank Group companies.
SoftBank plans to invest $15 billion to $25 billion in OpenAI, as well as $15 billion in Stargate, a joint venture between OpenAI and Oracle. After launching Stargate last month, Son met with Donald Trump for the second time since his election as president in November.
Masayoshi Son’s backing of OpenAI reflects SoftBank’s resurgence as an investment force after a period of decline caused by a slump in the value of its technology portfolio and a series of high-profile failures. SoftBank has a long history of partnering with technology companies in the US, and in 2008, SoftBank brought the iPhone to Japan.
