UPD. CD Projekt will release the first major expansion for The Witcher 3 in 10 years

Polish studio CD Projekt RED has announced the development of Songs of the Past, a story-based expansion for the role-playing game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This release will be the first major expansion for the game in ten years. The release is scheduled for 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

The official announcement took place on the company’s social media channels ahead of schedule due to a leak. CD Projekt RED’s Global Director of Public Relations Marcin Momot confirmed that the team had planned to make the announcement later.

«Sometimes things don’t go as you planned, but that’s life. We originally planned to announce this news tomorrow. The main thing is that the good news is already known, and we hope you are happy about it,» Marcin Momot commented on the situation.

The project is being developed in collaboration with Polish studio Fool’s Theory (known for The Thaumaturge and Seven: The Days Long Gone), which includes former developers of the original The Witcher. Details of the plot have not yet been revealed, but it is known that it will return the game’s protagonist to hunting monsters. The developers promise to release the first details in late summer 2026 — it is expected that Songs of the Past will be a smooth transition to The Witcher 4.

System requirements update

Along with the announcement, the developers have published updated system requirements for The Witcher 3, which will go into effect with the next technical patch. CD Projekt RED is dropping support for the Windows 10 operating system, regular hard drives (HDDs), and the DirectX 11 graphics API.

The game will now run on Windows 11 and DirectX 12, and installation on an SSD will be mandatory. Similar changes to the operating system requirements will also affect Cyberpunk 2077, as Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 in October 2025.

Minimum system requirements for PC:

  • Processor: Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600

  • Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 or AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT (8 GB)

  • Video memory: 6 GB

  • RAM: 12 GB

  • Storage: 70 GB of free SSD space

Prospects for Ukrainian localization

Along with the announcement of the new addition, discussions about the possible appearance of an official Ukrainian localization in The Witcher 3 have once again intensified in the community. Previously, the company set a precedent: in 2023, the role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077 received a Ukrainian text translation along with the release of the large story addition Phantom Liberty.

In addition, in the fall of 2024, CD Projekt RED opened a position for Localization Project Manager for Ukrainian translation.

«We are looking for a talented native Ukrainian speaker to take on the role of quality supervisor for the Ukrainian versions of our games. The ideal candidate should be attentive to detail, have excellent organizational skills, be able to effectively manage processes and resolve conflicts. Focus and determination are key factors — if you are eager to learn and constantly improve, do not hesitate to apply,» the Polish studio’s job description said.

The developers have not yet provided official confirmation of the translation of Songs of the Past or the main game into Ukrainian.

UPD. CD Projekt RED has launched official social media pages in Ukrainian. This was announced by Olga Sushitska, Localization Project Manager at CD Projekt RED.

«Did I say that? Something will happen. Join our official Ukrainian social networks,» she wrote, adding links to the official channels on Telegram, Instagram, and Threads.

Previously, Ukrainian players have repeatedly criticized the Polish studio for continuing to maintain its Russian-language accounts on social networks amid Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was released in May 2015 and has sold over 60 million copies. During its first years of support, the game received 16 free DLCs and two major story expansions, Hearts of Stone (2015) and Blood and Wine (2016).

In late 2022, the studio released a free next-gen update with improved graphics and technical improvements, and in 2024, it opened up the free REDkit mod editor to the community. The announced Songs of the Past expansion will be released 11 years after the completion of the game’s first stage of story support.
