Sony is working on technology to hide sensitive content in video games for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 6 «on the fly» using AI.
This is reported by GAMINGbible, which cites a Sony patent. It describes an automated tool designed to make any game suitable for children and adapt it to specific users based on what they would like to see.
A patent filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment shows that the processor will be able to detect and access the game’s audio and video, and, accordingly, be able to perform censorship.
This can include everything from muting profanity to blurring scenes of violence and nudity, and censored audio and video footage can be completely muted or hidden, or even replaced with deepfake AI technology so that players see something different.
«Artificial intelligence (AI) models are disclosed for customizing audio and video (AV) content, such as video game content, based on content filtering parameters provided by a user,» the patent’s official description states.
This way, the AI technology will be able to detect any content that a user has specifically requested to be censored and hide it. PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles could also benefit from this technology, as Sony notes that the patent will work across most major computing ecosystems.
Accordingly, some upcoming major AAA releases may give users the ability to censor foul language, nudity, scenes of violence, alcohol use, sexual scenes, etc.
The patent states that players will be informed about upcoming content both before and during play. During this time, the AI will perform censorship based on the user’s preferences. It will be able to choose whether to «remove content» or «replace content,» and since Sony says the technology is very flexible, users can set their own settings as they see fit.
