After a nearly 24-hour outage that brought the PlayStation Network (PSN) to a complete standstill, Sony has announced that it will provide compensation, but not for all gamers.
Sony said it would offer PlayStation Plus subscribers an extra 5 days for free. However, the company has not explained what caused the largest PSN outage in 14 years.
«Network services have been fully restored following an operational issue. We apologize for the temporary inconvenience and thank the community for their patience. All PlayStation Plus users will automatically receive an additional 5 days of service», — Sony said.
The outage lasted for most of the day, with the first signs of trouble appearing around 6 p.m. ET on Friday. Sony said service was restored before 7 p.m. Saturday. During the outage, players had trouble logging into their accounts, visiting the PlayStation Store, or launching games.
The biggest PSN outage occurred on April 20, 2011, and the servers
were finally launched on May 14, 2011, lasting a total of 23 days. The outage occurred due to numerous security breaches of the service.
Hackers breached PSN servers and gained access to the personal data of over 77 million users at the time. To prevent the hackers from gaining access, PlayStation had to take its servers offline to prevent further damage.
