Google DeepMind employees are unionizing to protest the use of the company's AI developments for military purposes
Google DeepMind headquarters workers have voted to form a union to prevent the company's technology from being used by the Israeli and US militaries. In a letter to Google management sent on Tuesday, the workers demanded that the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and Unite the Union be recognized as their joint representatives. It is reported that 98% of CWU members at DeepMind supported the decision during the vote.

In a letter to Google management sent on Tuesday, the workers demanded that the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and Unite the Union be recognized as their joint representatives. It is reported that 98% of CWU members at DeepMind supported the decision during the vote.
“We do not want our AI models to be involved in violations of international law, but they are already contributing to Israel’s genocide of Palestinians,” an anonymous DeepMind employee said in a statement released by the CWU. “Even if our work is used solely for administrative purposes, as management has repeatedly told us, it still helps make genocide cheaper, faster and more efficient. This must stop immediately, as must the harm to Iranians and human life everywhere in the world.”
If successful, the initiative will provide representation for at least 1,000 employees at Google DeepMind's London headquarters. Management now has 10 working days to voluntarily recognize the union. If it fails to do so, formal legal proceedings will be initiated to force recognition.
Google allegedly worked directly with the Israeli military on AI tools.
The union initiative contains specific demands from employees to Google, including:
a clear commitment to abandon the development of weapons, technologies or contracts that harm people or are used for surveillance;
negotiating the use of AI that “significantly impacts our roles, workload or employment stability”;
the right of employees to refuse to participate in projects that violate their "personal moral or ethical standards."
