Igor Babushkin, co-founder of Elon Musk's xAI startup, has announced his resignation.
“Today was my last day at xAI, the company I helped create with Elon Musk in 2023,” Babushkin wrote in a post on X. “I still remember the day I first met Elon, we talked for hours about AI and what the future might bring. We both felt that a new AI company with a different mission was needed.”
Babuschkin is leaving xAI to start his own venture capital firm, Babuschkin Ventures, which he says will support AI safety research and invest in startups that “move humanity forward and unlock the mysteries of the universe,” TechCrunch reports .
The co-founder of xAI says the inspiration for the firm came after a dinner with Max Tegmark, founder of the Future of Life Institute, during which they discussed how artificial intelligence systems can be safely created to help future generations thrive.
Before co-founding xAI, Babushkin was part of the research team at Google DeepMind that created AlphaStar in 2019. It was a breakthrough AI system that could beat the best players in the video game StarCraft. Babushkin also worked as a researcher at OpenAI for a few years before it released ChatGPT.
“I learned 2 invaluable lessons from Elon: No. 1 is not to be afraid to personally dive into technical problems with your sleeves rolled up, and No. 2 is to have a manic sense of urgency,” Babushkin said.
