This feature was discovered in the Spotify app code by reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong, who was able to create a visualization of what SongDNA would look like in the app. According to her findings, SongDNA will introduce a new experience that shows how songwriters are connected to each other and explores their different works.
For example, Wong showed how Rei Ami, from the cast of the animated film K-pop Demon Slayer, lent her voice to tracks other than those featured in the film.
If Spotify were to roll out the feature to the public, it could rival TIDAL’s interactive captions, which also let you explore music through songwriters. The feature could be useful for music professionals looking to collaborate with others, as well as anyone who wants to learn more about the people behind the scenes of music creation.
Wong noted that the Spotify app was updated to remove references to the SongDNA feature after she shared her discovery on X (Twitter). However, another reverse engineer, Chris Messina, was able to confirm the existence of SongDNA by finding references to the feature in the app’s code. According to Messina, the lines of code suggest that the feature could be used to reveal the network of songwriters, allowing users to learn more about their work.
