“Instant feedback, hints, and streaks — like Duolingo, only for SQL.” ML engineer creates SQLGuru web app for practice on real business cases

“I didn’t have enough apps for practicing SQL on real business cases — so that I could choose topics for training, with a nice interface and gamification so as not to get bored. Well, more precisely, my students didn’t have enough — and I decided to make one for them and for everyone,” wrote Hanna Pyleva on LinkedIn, who is also the CEO and founder of Data Loves Academy.
SQLGuru is a web application for practicing SQL that works on desktop and smartphones, offering a gamified learning format similar to Duolingo.
The service database contains 80 practical tasks, which are divided into three levels of complexity and cover various business domains. Users can independently choose specific SQL topics for training, as well as generate new tasks for their own individual queries.
The practical cases were based on the real experience of interviewing the author and her mentee, as well as an analysis of complex topics that most often cause difficulties for students.
To maintain regular motivation, the application has implemented game mechanics: streaks of continuous classes and a visual heatmap of daily activity.
The app has a premium plan. It allows you to use an AI tutor who provides a detailed analysis of errors in simple words, provides smart tips for a specific query, and reviews solutions.
The development itself lasted two months, and during this time the author exceeded Claude Max's limits only once, and all new reviews in the application are collected automatically every day and promptly processed together with a team of AI agents.
Future plans for the platform include adding questions on statistics and metrics for more comprehensive preparation for data interviews, launching a mock interview simulator, and integrating a resume optimization tool that will allow Anna to scale her experience in reviewing hundreds of profiles and provide personalized advice automatically.
