Sternenko suggests that SpaceX may have taken such measures at the request of the Trump administration. There is no confirmation of this assumption in his post, and no official statements from SpaceX or the Ukrainian authorities regarding the incident were found at the time of writing.
Starlink speed restrictions have already occurred. In late January 2026, SpaceX, at the request of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, introduced a limit of 75–90 km/h to prevent Russia from controlling strike drones via Starlink. At the same time, Ukraine was preparing “white lists” of permitted terminals.
Separately, from March 2026, according to specialized publications, standard Roam and Priority tariffs have a global speed limit of 100 mph, i.e. about 160 km/h.
Higher speeds require special flight plans. Whether the nighttime failure is related to this limit or another SpaceX decision is unknown.
UPD. Presidential advisor Sergei "Flash" Beskrestnov confirmed that tonight SpaceX introduced speed limits for Starlink terminals while in motion.
"Currently, the restriction applies to the StarShield "military package" of services and is set at a speed of 100 miles per hour. Our defense forces did not receive any warning about such a restriction, and this led to the disruption of a number of missions. Obviously, this action cannot be a coincidence and is related to the current political situation," he noted.
