Counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine has exposed and detained a 21-year-old student in Odessa who was an agent of Russian special services. The traitor was not only collecting intelligence for sabotage, but also planned to hack city lights with the help of software obtained from the occupiers to spread Russian propaganda.
"Easy" earnings and working for the enemy
The student came to the attention of Russian supervisors while looking for part-time work in thematic Telegram chats. He later agreed to carry out tasks for the Russian special services for a monetary reward, the SBU press service reports .
Among the enemy's first assignments were:
preparation of sabotage - the defendant recorded the locations of large generators in Odessa for their subsequent arson;
surveillance — the agent was collecting data about one of the critical infrastructure facilities in the region and trying to find out the residence address of a Ukrainian serviceman.
Hacker provocations: propaganda on city lights
A separate area of the agent's activity was the preparation of informational and psychological provocations to destabilize the situation in the port city.
To do this, the Russian curators gave the student special software. With the help of this software, he was supposed to hack the system for controlling Odessa's advertising city lights and change the official images to Russian propaganda. The next step, according to the curators' plan, was to virtually "place" the Russian flag on a city light in the very center of the city.
Detention and punishment
SBU officers documented the traitor's every move and detained him at his place of residence. During the search, they seized his mobile phone, which contained irrefutable evidence of correspondence and cooperation with enemy intelligence services.
SBU investigators informed the detainee of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed under martial law).
The court has currently chosen a preventive measure for him - detention without bail. The traitorous student faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
Comprehensive detection measures were carried out by SBU officers in the Odessa region under the coordination of the SBU Counterintelligence Department and the procedural leadership of the Odessa Regional Prosecutor's Office.
