OpenAI plans to turn ChatGPT into an "AI super assistant" this year

Google’s antitrust lawsuit with the US Department of Justice has revealed an internal OpenAI strategy document titled «ChatGPT: Strategy for the first half of 2025.» What is the company planning?
According to The Verge, the document describes the company’s ambition to create «an AI super assistant that deeply understands you and is your interface on the internet». Apparently, OpenAI wants to turn ChatGPT into something more than just a chatbot.
«In the first half of next year, we will begin transforming ChatGPT into a super assistant: one that knows you, understands what you care about, and helps with any task that a smart, reliable, emotionally intelligent person with a computer can perform,» the document, dated late 2024, says.
OpenAI believes that «the time has come» because it has models that are «finally smart enough» to perform agent-like tasks using a computer, which could increase ChatGPT’s ability to be useful to the user. The document describes the «super assistant» as «an intelligent entity with T-shaped skills» to perform both broadly applicable and highly specialized tasks.
«The broad part is about making life easier: answering questions, finding a house, contacting a lawyer, signing up for a gym, planning a vacation, buying gifts, managing a calendar, keeping track of a to-do list, sending emails.» It mentions coding as an early example of a more highly specialized task.
OpenAI sees hardware as essential to its future, and wants people to think of ChatGPT not just as a tool, but as a companion. This aligns with Sam Altman, who recently said that young people are using ChatGPT as a «life coach».
«Our vision for ChatGPT is to help you throughout your life, no matter where you are. At home, it should help answer questions, listen to music, and suggest recipes. On the road, it should help you get to the right place, find the best restaurants, or meet up with friends. At work, it should help you take notes during meetings or prepare for a big presentation. And when you’re out and about, it should help you reflect and relax,» the head of OpenAI noted.
In a section of the document describing the competition between chatbots and AI, the company writes that «we are leading, but we cannot stop» and that «growth and revenue will not go hand in hand forever.» The company acknowledges that there are «powerful players who will use their reach to the benefit of their own products,» and says that OpenAI will advocate for regulation that would require other platforms to allow people to install ChatGPT by default.
OpenAI has previously been reported to be exploring the possibility of allowing users to log into third-party apps through their ChatGPT account. It is currently gauging developer interest in such a feature, which would compete with similar services from Google, Apple, Meta, and others.
