The parties did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition, but according to the analytical platform PitchBook, the value of GPTZero is currently estimated at over $88 million. Among the startup’s key investors are venture funds Uncork Capital, Neo, Footwork and famous angel investor Jack Altman.
GPTZero was founded in 2023 by Edward Tian and Alex Tsui. Tian created the first version of the tool while he was a senior at Princeton University. The service went viral immediately after launch, and over the next three years it evolved into a platform that can detect not only generated text but also AI-generated «hallucinations» in social media and documents.
According to Edward Tian, the company has shown rapid growth since its launch. The number of registered GPTZero users has already exceeded 19 million, and the startup’s annual recurring revenue (ARR) has reached $30 million.
«GPTZero started with the mission of preserving what is human. Now we need to preserve critical thinking,» Tian noted.
As part of the deal, founders Tian and Cui will join Superhuman to lead a new division focused on content verification. All 30 GPTZero employees will also be transferred to the buyer, Superhuman CEO Shishir Mehrotra said. GPTZero itself will continue to operate as a standalone product.
The integration of GPTZero technologies should strengthen Superhuman’s originality verification system, including Grammarly’s artificial intelligence detector and Authorship, a product that helps authors prove the originality of their work across websites and apps.
According to Mehrotra, AI content recognition is critical in the education sector, as well as in consulting, recruiting and media. Education currently accounts for about a third of the total annual revenue of Superhuman’s flagship writing assistant, Grammarly (which exceeds $700 million), while professional enterprise users provide the rest.
This acquisition marks Superhuman’s fourth major acquisition as part of its strategy to build a global productivity ecosystem. The company, which began as Ukrainian startup Grammarly, previously acquired collaboration assistant Coda, email client Superhuman, and AI spreadsheet tool Rows .
