Swarmbotics AI, a robotics company, has developed a new class of ground-based modular unmanned systems that operate in coordinated swarms and are aimed at destroying tanks.
According to Defense Blog, the anti-tank modification is called FireAnt. It is a ground-based drone designed to operate in groups under the control of a single operator to detect, track, and destroy heavy armored vehicles using inexpensive ammunition.
Swarmbotics AI describes FireAnt as: «modular, expendable, autonomous swarms of unmanned ground vehicles that integrate into human formations.» The company claims that integrating drones into units will help increase the speed of combat missions.
Swarmbotics AI emphasizes that the drone’s electronics are IP67-rated and resistant to dust, heat, vibration, and shock. The company says that modularity is a central element of the design, and the payload can be quickly replaced in the field. In addition, the drones are designed to integrate with popular robotics software such as ROS 2 and JAUS.
The company positions FireAnt as a low-cost anti-tank weapon option alongside reconnaissance, mapping, and data relay options. Swarmbotics AI sees these drones as a cost-effective alternative to expensive anti-tank missiles and heavy artillery systems.
