Prehistory
A developer named galaxycarpet posted on Reddit that he had recently come across a large-scale tax fraud scheme involving certified ERP software. He wanted to report it properly, so he went to the official government portal (gov.gr), which clearly stated: "To report tax evasion by phone, call 1517."
"I dialed the number, expecting to give all the details. Instead, the operator said that they do not accept complaints by phone, said to just use the website and hung up. It turned out that this is a call center, which is maintained at taxpayers' expense and whose only real job is to tell people not to call them," the IT worker noted.
The developer thought that this might be some kind of error or a temporary glitch. Therefore, back in October 2025, he drafted and sent an official letter to the Ministry of Finance, pointing out this absurd paradox and asking for it to be fixed.
"I was stupidly ignored. Absolute deathly silence for months," the Greek added.
Spreading the story through vibecoding
"Since the official path didn't lead anywhere, I decided to give the matter publicity. A few days ago, I spent about two hours to quickly put together a simple dashboard (fix1517.gr) and expose all this trash with the help of screenshots and a survey. I posted it here, on r/europe, and the post simply blew up the network, gaining almost half a million views," the IT guy wrote.
Only then did the authorities react. However, instead of restoring the hotline, the government chose the easiest way out — over the weekend, it removed the page with the instructions from the gov.gr portal. Now the link opens with a 404 error.
The developer's message on fix1517.gr states: "On 05/21/2026, shortly after the public outcry caused by the fix1517.gr platform, the official instructions of the Ministry of Finance regarding filing telephone complaints about tax fraud at number 1517 were removed from the gov.gr portal. Currently, the page gives a 404 error. The telephone line itself continues to work, but no messages are registered there. The official letter (ref. No. 188600) has remained unanswered for 207 days."
So in his post on Reddit, the IT guy summed up: "We have what we have. The European ministry is ready to literally erase the public information page on the national portal to hide the evidence, instead of just fixing a broken phone line."
At the same time, the author of the post expressed admiration for the opportunities that AI tools now provide.
“Usually, creating a website for such public things takes a few days: you have to fiddle with the template code, lick the layout and configure the deployment. By the time you’re done, all the excitement has already disappeared. Vibe coding allowed me to launch instantly, while the topic was still hot, and catch them by surprise. It’s really cool to see that these AI tools can be used to make a real impact on the world, and not just to create another template SaaS clone or a banal task scheduler.”
