Microsoft says "handwriting code is a thing of the past" as AI agents completely change the Windows 11 development process
The statement by prominent Microsoft engineer David Fowler that “manual coding is finally a thing of the past” has sparked heated debate among IT professionals. And although the phrase sounds categorical, it is not about the disappearance of the programmer's profession, but about a fundamental change in his daily tasks.
The statement by prominent Microsoft engineer David Fowler that “manual coding is finally a thing of the past” has sparked heated debate among IT professionals. And although the phrase sounds categorical, it is not about the disappearance of the programmer's profession, but about a fundamental change in his daily tasks.
Thanks to the development of tools such as GitHub Copilot, writing code line by line is becoming a thing of the past, writes Cybernews. Modern AI models are able to independently receive tasks, deploy the necessary environments in the cloud, run tests and check the performance of programs. In fact, artificial intelligence tests its own code in a cloned environment before sending it to a person.
Today, the role of a programmer is increasingly reminiscent of an orchestra conductor: instead of writing templates, the specialist controls the work of AI agents, defines the architecture, and corrects algorithm errors.
Earlier, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella noted that about 30% of all code at the company is already created using artificial intelligence.
At the same time, according to a report by Veracode, approximately 44% of AI-generated code contains known bugs or vulnerabilities, confirming that ongoing human involvement in verifying the results remains critical.
AI builds and protects Windows 11
Thanks to the use of AI agents in the development of Windows 11, developers are freed from routine work - analyzing long logs, searching for failures, and switching between different tools.
Moreover, Microsoft is also using artificial intelligence to test the security of the AI code itself. The specialized MDASH (Microsoft Security multi-model agentic scanning harness) system uses more than 100 autonomous agents to search for vulnerabilities in critical Windows components and the Azure cloud platform.
Community reaction
Fowler's provocative statement has caused a mixed reaction among IT professionals. Some developers on social media emphasize that they continue to "write code every day and are not going to stop," while others welcome the automation of routine and the opportunity to switch to solving high-level tasks.
Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
