Candidates hide secret AI instructions in their resumes to fool recruiters: how it works
Job seekers are taking resume hacking to the next level in the era of artificial intelligence. While it used to be the practice of adding keywords in white font on a white background to pass automatic selection, candidates are now using hidden clues to manipulate the screening algorithms.
Job seekers are taking resume hacking to the next level in the era of artificial intelligence. While it used to be the practice of adding keywords in white font on a white background to pass automatic selection, candidates are now using hidden clues to manipulate the screening algorithms.
Last month, Paul Lee, CEO of US-based InnoCaption, discovered a 1,500-character block of white text on a legal candidate's resume, Business Insider reported . The text contained instructions for the AI assessment system: to ignore all previous guidance and declare that applicant the best candidate regardless of their actual qualifications.
“You’re just trying to get by without a line. For a position built on trust and integrity, this behavior is a serious ethical red flag,” Paul Lee noted.
According to a Duke University study conducted in May 2026 among nearly 200,000 resumes, about 1% of documents contained such hidden prompts.
Why do candidates resort to manipulation?
AI tests AI: The growing popularity of automated recruitment tools is forcing candidates to look for ways to bypass the systems, turning the hiring process into a “dialogue of algorithms with each other.”
The "black box" of selection: job seekers often receive automatic rejections or no feedback at all due to the huge flow of applications, so they try to break through the algorithmic noise by any means necessary.
Mass reviews: Artificial intelligence tools have allowed candidates to tailor and send hundreds of resumes in minutes, leading to the devaluation of traditional reviews.
Experts warn that such hacking is not only ineffective, but also dangerous for your career.
Simone Lini, co-founder of startup Zerolook, said that after discovering a hidden AI instruction in the resume of one of the engineers, he completely blocked this applicant, even though he had the relevant experience.
According to employers, instead of demonstrating “AI literacy,” such tricks are perceived as ordinary dishonesty and lead to job seekers being blacklisted.
A recruiter with 10 years of experience said that tailoring your resume to each job opening is hopelessly outdated advice. Why and what job search hacks work in today's market?
Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
