UI/UX designer Danylo Laykun, together with his sister, Marketing Design Lead Daryna Laykun, have developed and released a new iOS app called Mewmori for effective learning of foreign vocabulary. The main feature of the service is the ability to quickly upload your own word lists, train them with nostalgic mini-games, and maintain motivation thanks to a virtual pet cat.

The idea for the project arose from a private problem. Daryna has been studying Slovenian for over a year, the translation of which into Ukrainian is practically absent in popular international services. After each lesson, she accumulated lists of words in notes that were quickly forgotten.

"I’ve been studying Slovenian for over a year, it’s completely unpopular and it’s extremely difficult to find it among apps. Every time after class, I would make a list of words, which, after writing them down in notes, would remain there. I shared this problem with my brother, and we started thinking about how to solve it. That’s how the idea of a tool was born, where you can enter words in a few clicks and study them on your smartphone," says Daryna Laikun.

Danylo took the initiative and took on the interface design and technical implementation of the tool.

"We began to think about how it would be more convenient to store and master large volumes of new words so that they would always be at hand and there would be a desire to learn them. Finally, I am ready to share the application that I have been working on since spring," notes Danylo Laikun.

The developers have abandoned standard templates and ready-made phrases, focusing on users' personal dictionaries. Currently, the service supports Ukrainian, English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, and Slovenian languages.

Key features of Mewmori:

  • Flexible word addition: the ability to load words either as a list (with native or automatic translation) or one by one.

  • Parallel libraries: maintaining multiple dictionaries from different languages simultaneously.

  • Game format: word training takes place through games familiar from childhood — "3 in a row", "Sea battle", filwords and an analogue of Fruit Ninja, where you have to cut watermelons. Classic flashcards and exercises for finding pairs are also available.

  • Tamagotchi element: the app features a mascot cat that you need to "feed" by regularly performing training exercises and not missing workouts.

The application is already available for download in the App Store. Users are offered a free version with basic functionality, as well as the opportunity to purchase a PRO plan.

Recently, dev.ua reported on another of Danylo’s developments — the Habit Tracker Us+ app, designed to build daily healthy habits through gamification and shared motivation. The main concept of the app is to combine a classic habit tracker with mutual accountability mechanics.
